Difficulty clicking a second time to get a cusp node - ends path instead
-
@VectorStyler I updated my prior post after you saw it.
Question - should the blue dot with slight magnetic pull be on by default with the default preferences? It seems strange that I had it with the customized pref installed but going back to default loses it.
If I adjust the tolerance for the node editor click, as you suggested before, would increasing it mean I'm increasing the tolerance and making it easier to have it snap?

@VectorStyler Last post for the moment on this topic!
Before swapping back to my customized preferences, I tried to go slowly over the last point to get it to show the magnetic pull or make that blue circle like it has in the past to no avail.
Are we asking the pen tool to do two very different tasks with the same function? Does double tapping the node equal an end of the path? or a continuation of the path but with a cusp node there?
I've always thought the latter and use the command key modifier key when clicking to intentionally end a path. Is there a better way?Is anyone else having this problem? Because it was working in the past but now it's not and it renders the pen tool almost useless to me at the moment...
UPDATE: I decided to test things out on the intel machine using the current build and it worked a lot better with my custom preferences even.... I'm going to do some more testing
I'm curious about the functionality of holding down the pen tool click and the path becomes straight for as long as the click is held down - is this meant to make a straight line? is there another purpose? I saw if i clicked a third time on a node it would erase it... but I did not see a way to keep the straight temporary path when the second click on the last node is held down.

Yes, it should be on by default.

@VectorStyler I seem to be having much better luck using the mouse to make the cusp nodes and the issue seems to be more with my stylus I'm using. I'm going to look more into that

yes, it could be the stylus / touch handling. I will test this with a tablet.

@VectorStyler I have a small Huion screen tablet with stylus I use for the intel machine and a wacom cintiq with a different stylus I use for the M1 Mac. The huion tablet seemed fine with both mouse clicking and with the stylus. The wacom stylus on the cintiq is where I had the most trouble. My driver is up to date and I calibrated the stylus again - nothing has improved yet - now playing with the settings some and increasing the tolerance in VS as well.
Even with the tolerance in VS set to 10 for example, I have to get the stylus to hit dead on the last node and even then it's hit or miss.UPDATE: It seems to me that the issue is with the stylus and not with the tolerance. I bumped the tolerance up to 25 and tried with the mouse and intentionally went far off course trying to make it mess up and it still made cusp nodes as it should lol. When I did the same with the stylus, it was still difficult to get them to not end the path even when I was dead on the last node....
nothing is noticeably different when I use the stylus and adjust the tolerance to normal or high levels - the result is always the same. It is noticeable when the mouse is used instead.

I restarted my computer completely because occasionally my USB wireless mouse stops functioning in part... I wondered if that was also affecting the stylus because the cintiq uses usb to control the wireless stylus - but that did not solve anything.
I own a few different wacom styluses so I tried two different ones and had the same bad result.
I'm just trying to help narrow down the issue. I'm also trying to remember when things first went poorly and if I was doing anything specific during that time.

I think there could be a precision issue when using touch / pen to point to nodes.

That seems to be the case - however, I did not seem to have issues using the huion tablet and corresponding huion stylus on the intel machine... just with the wacom stylus on the wacom cintiq. Would it be an issue with some and not others?

Cannot be sure, but I have a Wacom, so once I get there I will test it.

@VectorStyler Would it make sense to have the last node that is getting hovered over and then clicked a second time on to make it a cusp, change color or have a subtle hint that it is engaged? Right now when I hover and slowly move my cursor over the last node, there's no indication of anything - what if that node changed color or a small thin outer circle was added - something to visually indicate an action could take place there.
