Panels disappear when VS works in background
-
When working, I often use pinning my orders, inspirations, photos to my desktop via an additional app. It makes my work easier. The beta revealed a problem with disappearing panels when I click on a pinned piece and VS runs in the background.
I have checked this and it occurs when I focus any other app in small window and VS's window is visible in background.

@encart Yes, this is by design. Should also happen in 1.1
I think it can be made an option, the default behavior in other apps is also to hide panels.
-
@VectorStyler I may be wrong, but I don't think I experienced this panel hiding in 1.1. What are the benefits of using such a solution? System resources? I'm asking out of curiosity, because I was disconcerted by the disappearing part of the interface and thought it was a bug.
I checked in AI and there the panels do not behave this way.

I just checked Illustrator CS6 and it behaves the same way as VS does currently - panels auto-hide when another app is active. I can't speak for Adobe CC as I've never used it. I did also test this on Affinity Designer 2 and the same thing was true - all panels hide when another app is active.
I understand wanting to have room to post pics as reference images while you design. VS has a lot going on and reducing your screen real estate for reference images hinders it's full use in my opinion.
Have you considered getting a second monitor? I have a main monitor for my VS work and use the secondary monitor for everything else while designing. There are some apps that will allow you to pin an image to the desktop, such as "Cleanshot" for Mac.

Ok. I see. However, I often have situations where panels do not want to reappear. I can move objects on the canvas and they are invisible. Only changing the tool wakes them up.

I will try to replicate this.

@VectorStyler I would add that then the keyboard shortcuts do not work either. To get everything back to normal you have to change the tool.

What if you just click inside the canvas once?
-
@VectorStyler This is related to the overall topic so I am adding it here.
If I am using the 1.2.2 beta, if I click on another program, VS completely hides, not just the panels but the entire program. What I was discussing earlier in this thread was that it was normal for the open panels to hide when clicking on a different program. I'd like to clarify that the main workspace should still remain in view. This is what the other programs do.A real life example - I wanted to use a font finder program to see what a particular font was used in a design in VS where the font had previously been expanded. I open the font finder app and it needs to take a screenshot of the desired font shapes to scan the database. If I click on that program, the entire VS workspace disappears, which is not ideal and is a little jarring.
I understand the concept of what you were intending and it can be useful some of the time to get VS out of the way so another program can be used - it's just that I spend much of my time jumping over to another program temporarily and want to keep VS on the screen. I don;t know a great way to make it work for both cases

This should not happen. Did this occur on macOS Ventura?
-
@VectorStyler yes this occurs in Ventura. I have not upgraded to the newest os as of yet.
I just checked this on a different computer and its working normally, the VS workspace does not also minimize... So the issue is related to something local to the first computer. What would I need to send to you to narrow in obtaining the cause?
-
@Boldline Send me the settings and workspace files (better just zip the /resources/ folder as there are more files now in 1.2).
-
@VectorStyler I was able to replicate the issue several times yesterday but today it's working as it should.
-
@Boldline Could it be related to some specific panel being open, or docked to the main window.
-
@VectorStyler ok I'll keep an eye on it and take note of what panels are open and what is docked if it happens again.

Thank you for bringing up this possibility because it happened again! When I have only the blend panel docked on the right side but not completely collapsed to icon only, it will hide the whole VS workspace when I click on another application. If I remove the blend panel from the docking position and either shrink it to icon only or pull it free completely, the VS workspace does not hide.
I tested this with some other panels but did not have the same error occur like I did with the blend panelUPDATE: tested this example with the blend panel docked but not icon-only on my laptop and the same issue occurred there as well

@Boldline Replicated!

Awesome!!! Glad you could replicate it
