Area Zoom Broken
-
We did touch on this during another discourse about cursors, but my preferred Zoom method using Area Zoom is not working.
With Area Zoom selected in the Preferences/Document Editor, when the Zoom Tool (Z) is selected (zoom icon (+) showing), you can drag a blue marquée to zoom in to an area as normal.
However, when using the option key modifier to drag an area to zoom out (zoom icon (-) showing) - there is no blue area marquée showing and you get a strange sort of 'scrubby' zoom effect happening.

@Igull If it's a bug, I'm not sure it's a bad one — other apps that display the blue marquée both when zooming in and zooming out confuse me sometimes — being the same means no visual confirmation that you will zoom out when you release the mouse, except for the small loupe cursor with a minus in it.
IMO.

@Igull Yes, there is no blue marque when zooming out.
I'm not sure what the highlighted (blue) area would mean when zooming out?

@VectorStyler
There are actually three issues to this ...-
When you select Area Zoom in the preferences, zoom in and zoom out should both be Area Zoom - complete with blue marquées, one being the inverse of the other. The marquée in zoom in (+) defines the area to be zoomed in and hence the percentage zoom. In zoom out (-), the percentage of the zoom out is again defined by the size of the marquée - again, compared to the size of the displayed area. This has been the way since Pontius was a Pilate
You certainly don't expect an Area Zoom for Zoom In and a 'Scrubby Zoom' for Zoom Out ? -
Similarly, when you simply click the zoom in (+) tool, it should zoom in, centred on the zoom tool (assuming that preference has been set) by a step percentage (occasionally set in the preferences). The opposite should happen when zooming out (-). The zoom out function is not working well or randomly zooms out - occasionally displaying a zoom percentage in a box. Both Zoom In and Out are never fully centred on the zoom tool either (even with the preference set for Cursor Centred Zoom)
-
Perhaps a third zoom type should be offered as it is already there - Scrubby Zoom - where the zoom tool zooms in by dragging right and zooms out by dragging left - in fact, if you use the option key with the Zoom tool (as in the top item ), this is exactly what happens, drag right and it zooms in, drag left and it zooms out!

It's not a bug per se - its an implementation error If you select Area Zoom, then that's what you should get.

You know, that's exactly the case/problem with the loupe cursor — it's small and a bit difficult to see if it has a plus or a minus, also because when you zoom out you tend to unfocus your eyes (a short "timeout"), before focusing again on the screen after zooming is performed.
But anyway, maybe what you mean (regarding the zoom out marquée) is that the visible screen area should zoom out and fit inside the area you drag when you zoom out?
I'm not sure that level of precision when zooming out is needed. Is it?

@Igull Added this to the backlog as a bug.
