Text differences between VS file and PDF exported from VS

The scenario: creating a new VS file, setting text in Helvetica Regular, exporting the file to PDF format and also saving to VS format. Closing the VS file.
Upon opening the VS file in VS, text looks as expected. Opening the PDF in VS (File > Open) the text is in the correct locations, but is set in Helvetica Light Oblique. Opening the PDF in Preview shows the text in very bold - much more that expected.
