Hard to select object the first time when using shape effects

Using the shape effect tool. A selected and highlighted shape is hard to select after activating the shape effect tool. It takes some clicks.
After that selecting it with the transform tool or shape effect tools works as expected.

@Ingolf If the object has no shape effect (of the selected type), than an extra click on the object (on canvas) is needed to add a new shape effect instance.
This is to avoid adding effect just by selecting the tool.

With my settings I have to click several times.

On my system, I have to click 4 times before the shape effect becomes active.
