HSL sliders behaviour in CMYK document

  • I'm trying to use HSL sliders to adjust color, as it is the most intuitive for me. With a document set in CMYK color mode, I observe a very strange behaviour of HSL sliders when trying to fine tune colors

I get that VS tries to keep colors in CMYK gamut and prevents some combinations to be selected, but the way it works is very confusing.

    • adjusting any of H, S or L slider moves the other sliders even with basic in-gamut colors
    • these movements are not reversible, meaning coming back to the original value leaves the other sliders in different places than their original position
    • very quickly the color has nothing to do with adjustments
    • direct selection in the color wheel also behaves strangely

I hope this can be improved.

For comparison, Affinity manages to keep HSL sliders independent while keeping colors in CMYK gamut

@EricP Yes, this happens if the color is converted to CMYK when applied to the object.
But it is possible to change so it is kept in HSL mode:

    • in Document Setup -> Color -> check the "Store Color Mode" option. Then color is stored as HSL but the display of it will be in gamut CMYK.

  • @VectorStyler thank you. Yes checking this setting in document setup helps a lot. That works for me

One observation: this settings determines how colors are stored in the document (that is why it is a per-document option).

    • When disabled, colors are stored as CMYK, which means that changing the color profile will not "re-separate" these.
    • But when enabled, the color is stored in the selected color mode (RGB, HSL, etc), and colors are always "separated" on the fly when rendering, so you may get different CMYK values if the color profile is changed.

  • @VectorStyler thanks for clarifying this. So, I'd better set the final profile I need from the start to avoid bad surprises

You can also convert colors to CMYK with Effects -> Adjust Colors -> Color Mode and then they will stay CMYK.

  • @VectorStyler lot's of options. That's great. Thanks for this great software and your perfect support
