The vector brushes use the bend shape distortion to stretch vectors along a shape. This also works for images when the Distort Images is enabled.
But, in some cases when the whole brush is an image (as in Affinity), it can be better to use the image distortion (instead of shape) effect for this.
This will also distort gradients as an image.
