Layer panel: to select several objects

Using/through the layer panel, is it possible to select several objects at once? Holding down Shift only lets you add one object at a time, and I don't see this possibility. And why do I have a little triangle next to certain objects in this same panel?

@Pat Swiping through multiple round knobs will select those.
I added the Shift+ thing to the backlog, maybe it should select between.
