Jpeg import only gives me a black box

  • Just trying to import a jpeg file. All I get is a black box. How do I import an image and actually get the image? I've tried using the import dialog from the menu, and I've tried just dragging the jpeg onto the app icon. Neither of those work. I've tried saving the original image either as grayscale or as RGB and neither of those will work. I've tried saving the original from Photoshop, Affinity Photo and Preview. None of those work.

Am I doing something wrong? It doesn't seem a feature this simple should require any high-level training.

  • @jfraze Could be some special JPEG encoding that the app fails to read.
I would convert/export as PNG and import that, and send the JPEG file that doesn't import to the developer.

  • Does this apply to all JPGs you import?

There have been problems in the past with certain varieties of JPG, e.g. from iOS and macOS image library, and that specific problem seemed to result in black images. I myself have never had the problem in macOS or Windows editions.

What happens if you try with a JPG downloaded from a news site or Wikipedia. Also black?

  • @b77 is that annoying guy who wins by a whisker. ☺

  • @Ingolf Ah, sorry! It happened to me also… 😆

  • @b77 It's happened on every jpeg I've tried so far. I just tried a .png and that gave me blank white box instead of a blank black box. WTH. These files all open or convert in every other app I've tried.

  • Tried exporting from the original software as .eps, and that one seems to open. I guess that's a decent workaround. But it seems like it ought to import the jpegs or pngs.

  • I don't have the problem here. 🤔
I tried RGB, CMYK and Grey.

  • @jfraze If a restart of the app or of the Mac doesn't solve the issue, write a bit more about the OS & app version, and send the image to the developer.
Or post a link to it if possible, so we can test.

  • @jfraze At the risk of repeating what @b77 said, over time I've found occasional photo images that do not import properly into VS. Each time it happens I just send the original image by email to the developer and he usually has it solved by the next build release.
Two builds ago I had an issue copying and pasting images from an Affinity designer file into VS. It got fixed in the next build. Moving another photo today in the same situation worked perfectly.

@jfraze Send me the JPEG file. It could be some bug.

  • FYI, resetting the app on launch appears to have fixed this issue. Hopefully for good!
