Pros and Cons to using Shapes not paths for text on a path

I don't have a direct question per se, but I doing text on a path and realized I had not converted the circle shapes to curves. It seemed to give me some trouble when I was sizing the circles with the text attached, but it also allowed for using the power in the shape option to turn the circle into a partial circle.
@VectorStyler are there other pros and cons to using shapes instead of official paths for text on a path?

Not really, other than the "live" shape remains editable using its options.
What were the problems when scaling the circle?
