Can someone explain what the new addition of "Added option (preferences) to create distortion on tool selection." allows for specifically?

@Boldline In Preferences -> Editing Options there is a new check box (bottom right) "Create Distortion on Tool Selection".
When enabled, the distortion (and warp) tool selection will automatically add a new effect on the selected object.
By default it is off, meaning that an additional click is needed.

@Ingolf There is a problem when enabled:
To select most tools, a tool popover must be opened, and then the tool with the current visible icon might get selected, adding an unwanted effect to the selection.

As a general rule, selecting a tool in and of itself should not alter the document. This feature breaks that rule and violates the principle of least surprise, so while I can understand that some people might consider it a helpful workflow optimization, it definitely should not be default behavior.
