Is there a way to add one or more objects to an existing
mirror/symmetry group?I've found/developed a way to do this. However, I'd like to know
if you've already integrated such a feature, or what your solution
would look like?

@Subpath Layers panel, drag objects into the mirror group.
Or: double click to isolate, and draw / paste inside

@Subpath because a single object was repeated, not a group of objects. You have to start out with a group.

got it and it works this way
But not with a single object from the beginning.
