Some advice for supporting Vectorstyler the hard(ware) way

  • Hello to the pros,
I bought my current pc some 6+years ago. A Dell xps 8700 with an i7-4790, a Nvidia Geforce 720 and 8mg ram. I got the setup for something light years away from graphics. I don't think I even knew what a gpu was. If asked what a bezier curve was I might have answered something unique to french women. Something like Vectorstyler was not on my radar. Well that was then and here I am now. An old, very old hobbyist who gets great enjoyment from this software. But my sense(what's left of it) is my hardware is not quite up to the task of supporting Vectorstyler as it should be. I'd like some advice on a new system(the components) that would do Vectorstyler justice. I am not a gamer so I don't need the most powerfull and the most expensive stuff. If you think I just need a specific component that's kewl too.
    thanks,
    stephen

@STEVED Hi Stephen, and welcome to VectorStyler!
Your system spec looks alright. Do you use Windows 10 (version 1607 released on August 2016, or later) ?
I suggest you download the free trial and start using it (42 days with all feature enabled) and see if it is suitable for you on your system.

  • @vectoradmin: I'm on windows 10 pro fully up to date.
Trail? The trail is over. Vectorstyler was accused of being a superior design app. The jury found the defendant guilty as charged. I am now a vested($) user.
Google the 720 Nvidia gpu and you find the opinion that it is good for training wheels only. What I am wondering is will my old eyes see a more vibrant array of colors coming from a better gpu? Will I experience better performance? Using the blend tool I experienced significant lag in blends using gradients(although not so far
using the current build). But I still feel with gradients there is a lag. What worries me is that I have yet to try so many features of Vectorstyler. Black friday is coming. I don't want to short change this marvelous app.
    thanks

@STEVED The Nvidia 720 GPU has 1 or 2 GB memory, which is on the smaller side. I think the colors will be fine (depends on the monitor). The speed can be an issue with 1GB memory, as this is needed when rendering gradients.
And blending objects with gradients will create a lot of them.
Also: if there are a lot of gradients (several 100) or image effects, that may slow things down.

  • @vectoradmin
Let me be perfectly clear: I have already purchased Vectorstyler! I runs ok on the hardware I have. What I am wondering is if I upgraded my hardware (ie. a better gpu and specifically what gpu(s)) would I love Vectorstyler even more.
    p.s. I have a 32" curved monitor and a lower end 27" monitor.
    thanks

    @STEVED Misunderstood the question 🙂

Yes, a new HW will help. You also need more memory (if working on large documents).

If you plan to upgrade to a PC, then an NVIDIA GPU with 8GB, an Intel Core I7 (not much changed here) or even better an AMD Ryzen 9 and 32 GB of RAM (but 16GB at least) will work better. Also, higher speed RAM helps.

But the most love you get is from an Apple M1 (or the newer versions). I also use a Mac Mini (last years version), with 16 GB of RAM. It is another world.

BTW: The VectorStyler license you purchased can be used to install VS both on Mac and PC.

  • @vectoradmin: Thanks for the info! I'd love to get a high end mac but my x-wives have all my money. Don't know about a M1 but a M16 comes to mind 🙂
    thanks again,
