Some recommendations for the default (factory) settings

  • And again settings...

After trial period, purchasing VS and started up a clean install I was lost again like the first time and experienced what a new user would experience.

    First impressions are important!
So therefore a few non-binding recommendations for the default (factory) settings. Guiding first impression to make a newcomer feel satisfied.

  • @Ayo You can change the drawing of new objects to '1pt stroke & no fill'
by enabling 'Outlined New Objects' in Prefs/Settings > Changing.

You might also want to disable 'Filled Shapes with Pencil Tool' in Prefs > Changing.

Yeah, I also like the non-default options for these two better, and also
suggested to have segment preview enabled by default.

Yes I know, you can change a lot. It is not about what you can do, but about what a new user would experience on initial exploration.

  • @Ayo Oh, we did have lots of discussions on the forum about which are the
    best defaults… 🙂
…and the general conclusion was that the best way to please everybody is
for the app to let the first time user choose from a list of previous apps (AI,
CDR, etc) on first run, so that (some of) these Prefs adjustments are made
    automatically.

  • @b77 , like that Idea

  • @Ayo

    First, well done PDF 👍

To me it looks a bit like a kind of Adobe Illustrator view.
I can see the point in it, of course, if it's your main used
    tool.

Well, the Freehand tool is the first tool in CorelDraw, just
like the Pencil tool in VS, which of course can customized
to your own liking just like in VS.

The "next segment" seems only interest in relation
with the pen tool. Dont know if every new user would
be happy with it at start.

I have nothing to say about the other points

  • @b77
In my opinion it's not about what everyone wants and to make everyone happy but about profiling Vectorstylers approach and philosophy. To give Vectorstyler an identity. In my opinion, this is a bit lacking due to making too few explicit choices.

  • @Subpath said in Some recommendations for the default (factory) settings:

Can be, but that's not wrong because there lies the largest sales market, isn't it?

  • @Ayo I’m glad you have taken a special interest in improving the preferences. Everyone agrees they need improvement. I like your approach of showing the before and after ideas. I agree with your suggestions in the latest pdf aside from making all shapes lines with no fill by default.

  • @Ayo said in Some recommendations for the default (factory) settings:

Would say that you are right about that, because of Adobe users who would
like to create vector graphics without subscription.

In the meantime CorelDraw has also switched to subscription,
    so there is another market.

But that the tools work like in Adobe Illustrator was not an argument for
me to buy and that Tools dont work like in CorelDraw was
not an obstacle. But i think i am minority with that. It was
the tools and the features in VS.

  • @Subpath
I think it all has to do with what I said before. If Vecorstyler has its own strong and clear positioning, you can make choices from there. From the overall look and feel to which tool is first (and visible) in the drawing row.

    For example, let's say:
Vector styler = Precision Vector Art Application > Pen tool first
Vector styler = Intuitive Vector Art Application > Pencil tool first

    Simple!

Ah.. yes... then we say; both please. But I think that's not right. You have to put something first to boost your profile. That is not to say that one excludes the other.

I support moving the pen tool to the first spot because it's going to be the most commonly used tool. The pencil tool gets used often but not the way the pen tool is

  • If you switch to two-column toolbox (Panels > Toolbox Style), the Pen tool is the first.

Btw, what do you guys think should be the natural order of these tools after VS gets
a Curvature tool? (It's on the roadmap).

  • @Ayo said in Some recommendations for the default (factory) settings:

If Vectorstyler has its own strong and clear positioning,

The way I see it, I don't think VS is about being "Precision Vector Art" or "Intuitive Vector Art". The positioning I see for VS is a high end vector editing program catering to power-users who want to fine-tune it to work most efficiently for their needs. The fact that it is so feature-rich and customizable is a large part of its identity. In the end, the developer is the one setting the identity, no matter how we personally see it

  • @Boldline
It was just an example of how a positioning statement can be a guideline for a choice. Indeed, it is not for me/us to determine that.
With this in mind, your positioning "high end vector editing program catering to power-users" is a plea for the Pen tool first! But you already shared that.
It's just little things, but many little things...

  • @Ayo very true! I like many of the ideas you've been sharing - thanks for doing so

  • @Ayo

... no need to say both 🙂

I am not really bothered if the pen tool where first
(i dont used it so much) as long as i can set VS to my
    needs. Which is the case.

  • @Boldline,

....The positioning I see for VS is a high end vector editing program catering to power-users who want to fine-tune it to work most efficiently for their needs....
    well said

have you any example what thats for ?
    picture ?
never heard of such a Tool

@b77 i think i get it in the meantime
found a Illustrator Video, but thanks anyway

I added this to the backlog.
