Deciding what part of separated path to keep and what to delete

if I create a shape and then convert to curves and then select a node or nodes to then use the separate at node tool on the top menu bar; when I hit "delete", how does it decide which side to delete and which to keep? Is there a way to tell it what part to delete and what part to retain?

@Boldline When deleting a node, it will delete the segment before the node along the path direction.
