Can a clipped vector and the containing vector be aligned with the align tool?

Is there a way the align tool could be used when selecting two objects where one piece is clipped inside the other? I want to be able to grab both pieces and center them to each other but because the shape is inside the containment shape, it does not let me - it treats it as one shape - could there be a way for it to treat them as two for that purpose?

@Boldline Select the objects (both group and member) using the small circle in the layers panel. Then alignment should work.
