Sorry, I have looked through the documentation, but it's clear as mud.
      I have a jpg.
I draw a rectangle on top of the jpg
I want to use the rectangle to 'mask' the jpg below (so only the portion of the jpg inside the rectangle is visible)
How do I do this ?

@ambros In the layers panel, drag&drop the image (jpg) object into the rectangle (not before or after, but over it).
        Works with any clipping shape.

If I import a JPG and rotate it, I have to select render as image to get the expected results. For example I cannot drag the shape (mask) around and see different parts of the image. I see the same selection of the image below.

Resizing the shape when it does work shifts the image around.

@Ingolf If the image object is inside a clipped group (as it happens when dragged in the layers panel), double click the group and the the image can be selected and moved around to show different clipped parts.
Moving the shape will move the whole group (clipping shape + content).
