Using an existing color in a gradient without having to go to the palette menu afterward to get it

I'm having trouble understanding how to best use the gradient tool.
I feel like everything is too modal and there's not enough freedom to choose colors flexibly.
For example I wanted to add a gradient to the wooden section of a pencil I drew. I l already sampled and added the color to the area. When I use the gradient tool, it uses an existing black to white gradient that replaces my existing color. I want to use my existing color in the gradient, but I don't see an easy way to do that. The only way I see to do that is to make sure it gets added to the default palette first, then go in after making the gradient and swap the orange to the color I wanted.
I'd love the option to drag a swatch from the color panel and drop it onto one of the gradient color swatches, or double click on a color stop in the gradient panel and get an immediate eyedropper to click on my color already on the art board. -
@Boldline Is that existing color a spot color?
The gradient tool should pick that color by default.EDIT: replicated the issue using the example file.

@vectoradmin I'm glad you were able to figure it out! The color in this case was not a spot color.
