Selecting multiple areas without excluding overlapping parts

How can I change how nodes/ objects are selected using the Shift key so that selections are added when areas overlap? I could not find it.

@encart No such option, there are problems with this issue as removing selection with shift is also needed.
What kind of modifier keys could be used to distinguish from these two modes?
