Why would the save indicator button stay black?

On a recent file I was working on, the save indicator at the bottom of the screen stayed black even as I made a good number of actions on the screen. I opened a brand new file and started dragging out numerous rectangles as a test and I first noticed the indicator was a lighter gray to begin with and then quickly turned to red. Saving and reopening the original file got it back on track and it was showing red after a few actions
