Merging expanded text causes some to disappear and the rest to strokes no fill

In build 72, I expanded live text and then attempted to merge it and some parts disappeared and other parts flipped to a stroke with no fill. Using union boolean worked as it should - but I'm confused why the merge was an issue. I also tried cleaning up segments before trying again to no avail. Here is the video
