Drag select a second object with shift modifier deselects first seection (& attempted second selection)

I noticed today that if I make a selection (either by clicking directly on it or drag select) on the canvas and then hold down the shift modifier and attempt to drag select another shape or selection, the original shape or selection is automatically deselected. I can still click on a second shape or selection while holding sown the shift modifier and it will add to the selection as expected. I tested this on a new VS file and also removed my custom settings and used the default and had the same unwanted result
