Does this program work with Mojave?

    @jfraze yes, it works.
And now I can replicate the issue (at least the Appearance panel).
It does not work with the text. This is a bug, will be fixed ASAP.

  • I'm uploading a screen recording of another example of something which to all appearances isn't working for me. I'm trying to select and move a piece of type on a path. The selection tool seems to refuse to select it at all unless I drag select all the way around it. (Usually just clicking on the path has worked but not with this text path, and a few others I've run across randomly.) Worse, the path with its text remains below the bottom layer, and is thus invisible when it's in my working area. I can't get it to move into any other layer. Or maybe it IS in another layer but it's visibility is behaving as if it were below the bottom layer, behind a jpeg background. How do I get it to the front so it's visible? Am I doing something wrong still, or is this a glitch in my system?

  • In case it makes a difference, this text path was created by duplicating a working text path from the same document. I selected the path, duplicated, and edited the text... the original path continues to behave as expected. The duplicated path sits beneath everything and can't be moved forward in the layer or position hierarchy. Also, now that I think of it, it didn't either duplicate nor copy/paste the path with text... I had to copy/paste the text into the path as a separate step. Is that expected behavior? Shouldn't there be a way to duplicate the object so that both the path and its text are duplicated?

I tried copy/pasting but it did the same thing. It's also very frustrating that I can't seem to lock the item, so even though it seems to be displaying as if behind everything else in the document, it behaves as if its in front of everything... If I try to select anything near it, it gets in the way and tries to select and edit the type, no matter what tool I use to select. I can't select the path or the path with text except by drag-selecting, which selects everything around it. Locking objects is doing nothing to prevent that.

  • @jfraze

could not help you with the selection Problem

But here a video how you could do Text on Path in VS.

For a single Text Line call "Shape Text"
just select the Text Line then choose the Shape Editor Tool
you see a Line underneath you Text which you could edit directly
    with the "Shape Editor Tool.

Alternative call the Text on Path Panel
Both way are shown in the Video.

    here the Video

@jfraze From what I can see in the video, you have a text on path that can be selected, but cannot be moved.
This is because the text is linked to the path, so it cannot be moved separately.
But if both the path and the text are selected then they can be moved.

Another thing could be that you want to move the text along the path. This is done with another tool: 0_1659984810743_textonpath.png
The tool can be found among the text tools.
The default transform tool cannot move the text on path if linked to the path.

  • No, that's not the problem. I can easily select and edit the text. That's not what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to select the path itself and move it. I can only do that by drag-selecting around the entire path. In most other instances I can use the arrow selection tool and select the path with a single click. That's not working here.

But the more important problem is that I can't get it to move through the hierarchy. It's appearing down at the bottom beneath the jpeg background, so it's effectively invisible. But it's showing in layers as if it's in the very top layer. You see in the video how it disappears beneath the background when I move it into the live area? I need it to be visible! There seems no way to move it forward so I can see the text in the live area.

  • @Subpath Thanks. I know how to create text on a path. That part is working fine. The problem here is selecting the path with its text so I can move it into position... and the mysterious way in which this particular object sits behind the jpeg background no matter what I do. See in the video how it disappears behind the background when I move it. It's supposedly in the very top layer, the background is in the very bottom layer, yet this text object appears (or rather disappears) as if behind it.

Selecting the path with its text is working fine in other objects, but not here. If this was the only time that's happened I'd just delete and start over, but this happens to me frequently enough I'd like to know what's going on.

Can you send me by email the example where this is not working. It could be a bug, that we cannot replicate.

  • @VectorStyler It's 130 MB. I'll see if I can make a reduced-size version that has these issues, but I'll have to work on that later. Thanks for your help. I'm mystified as to why I'm having so many bizarre issues.

  • @jfraze

    your welcome

  • I still haven't had a chance to work on the reduced-size version of the file, but maybe a quick question will help with this... What is the trick for selecting a path with its text? It seems I can only select the path itself, or the text on the path. I can't duplicate or copy/paste the path with the text included. Is there a tool or key combo that would select the whole thing so I could duplicate both at once?

  • @jfraze Click and drag to select the text-on-path object, then Option-drag to duplicate it.

You can also select the path with click and the text with Shift-click, or vice versa.

  • @b77 Click and drag selects everything else around it, too. I want to be able to just select the path with its text, as you can in AI simply by using the direct select tool.

Option drag of course duplicates it, but only either the text or the path, whichever I've managed to select. And the duplicate is always ending up mysteriously displaying as if behind my bottom layer, even though the layers palette shows it above everything else.

Also, shift click is doing absolutely nothing for me. It doesn't change the selection at all.

FYI, I've been using Illustrator (and before that Freehand) professionally for decades, so I do know how to use a vector design program, and how to put together and work with a multilayer vector document. Maybe I should just uninstall this program and re-install from scratch. The descriptions of how things are supposed to work all make perfect sense. But nothing seems to work as it's supposed to for me at all.

They should be selectable as individual objects, or as two objects (Shift+Click) or Box marque.

If none of this works, try in the Layers panel by clicking (Shift+) on the small circles at the end of each object.

    Shift+click works here.

  • @jfraze Reinstalling is not needed, as you can reset the app to default by holding down Command-Shift-Option when starting the app.

But don't do this before sending the Prefs files to the developer, just in case it's something related to some setting there:

    • switch to the Finder;

    • click the 'Go' menu > Go to Folder…

    • paste this: ~/Library/Application Support/NumericPath/VectorStyler1.0/vector/data/resources

    • press Enter/Return.

    • copy these two files (settings.xml and workspace.xml) somewhere else.

Then you can reset the app and see if the issue is solved.

If it's solved, send the .xml files to the developer's email (csraba at this domain).

  • @VectorStyler Thanks. Yes, I'd discovered the layers panel method right after posting, but marquee select isn't practical since it selects everything around it as well, and shift-click isn't working in my installation.

  • Found a Preference option for "Select Text on Path Anchor." That seems to make it do what I want.

Weirdly, it also allows me to duplicate the selected object so that it appears in its correct place in the hierarchy, although I'm not sure why it has that effect. If I marquee select, it always duplicates or copy/pastes into that weird state where it sits in the top layer but is (dis)appearing at the bottom of everything.

  • @b77 Tried that. Now I can import jpegs without them turning into black boxes, so that's an improvement! I'm still not finding that shift-select is doing anything. Is this supposed to be with the Transform Tool or something else?
